Inside the Atelier

The WorkshopChapter I, The Aria6 MIN READ

Every rendition begins on the atelier floor — where a silhouette is measured against the body, not the pattern. This is where the Chapter’s premise gets tested against fabric, and where most of it survives unchanged.

The single unbroken seam that gives The Aria its name sounds like a small thing until you try to cut it. Most patterns break a silhouette like this into three or four pieces — a shoulder panel, a back yoke, a separate collar — because it’s faster, and it wastes less fabric. We asked our cutters to try it as one continuous line instead. The first attempt used almost twice the material of a conventional cut.

“We kept the version that cost more, because it was the only one that looked inevitable.”

That decision — favoring the harder cut over the efficient one — is the closest thing we have to a house rule. It doesn’t show up on a spec sheet. It shows up in how the collar sits, and in how little there is to notice once you stop looking for something to notice.
